Due to the health risks related to Ortho Evra, there have been many lawsuits filed against Ortho-McNeil, the company behind the birth control patch. There are an estimated 100 lawsuits pending against them right now. Those lawsuits have been settled in the range of millions of dollars. Ortho-McNeil refuses to accept responsibility for the injuries cause by Ortho Evra usage.
In November of 2005, the FDA updated the labeling of the Ortho Evra birth control patch to warn users and health care providers that the birth control patch exposes women to more estrogen then the birth control pill.
In an attempt to reduce the amount of damage this has caused for the company, the makers of the birth control patch have registered several negative domain names, such as: deathbypatch.com, and orthoevrakills.com.
A memo from the makers of the birth control patch stated that Ortho-McNeil refused a study in 2003 comparing Ortho Evra with Ortho-Cyclen because there was to high a risk that it would produce a result that showed Ortho Evra as worse then Ortho-Cyclen.
Despite the rumors going around, there has not been a recall for the Ortho Evra birth control patch. Ortho Evra is still on the market.
